LIGHT ERRATIC

2024

An ongoing project in collaboration with Mark Edmonds.

Light Erratic reflects upon a large block of labradorite recovered from the Holms in Stromness. Drawn from the bedrock of Labrador, the block was carried to Orkney in the late 19th century. Labradorite refracts light in a manner that gives it a spectacular iridescence. Associated in Inuit and Innu tradition with the Aurora Borealis and with ancestral spirits, what they called ‘Firestone’ found a new value in Europe as a semi-precious gem.

The presence of labradorite in Orkney speaks of movement and displacement; a flow of materials and people caught up in local and wider currents. The changing play of light within the stone also catches a sense of transformation; shifts of scale, perspective and meaning as things move from one place or person to another.

A collaborative project working with sculpture, film, photography and sound collage, Light Erratic tracks the entanglement of people, stone, the sea and the night sky. Involving exchanges across the Atlantic, it creates a space in which coastal communities in Orkney and Labrador can explore the past, present and future of their connections.
