Anne Bevan, Ocean of Time

OCEAN OF TIME

2017

Work produced while Bevan was artist in residence for the project Orkney: Beside the Ocean of Time, a collaborative and interdisciplinary AHRC funded research programme, focusing on culture in science.

With the Pier Arts Centre as a partner, the project involved close collaboration with academics Niamh Downing, Richard Irvine, Lourdes Lopez-Merino, Anthony Krus, and Carina Fearnley. It aimed to generate new understandings of the interrelationship between human community, Deep Time and landscape change.

Using an interdisciplinary approach, the project drew upon Social Anthropology, Literature, Archaeology, Palaeoecology, Geology and Art to find innovative ways to investigate and represent time-depth in landscape, using Orkney as a model.

Bevan chose the familiar location of the West Shore of Stromness as her outdoor studio, casting, drawing, walking and collaborating over the duration of the year long project, which culminated in an exhibition Walking the Sound and a Festival of Deep Time hosted at the Pier Arts Centre in 2017.
