Rosengarten

2004

A collaborative exhibition and book by Anne Bevan and Janice Galloway.

The installation consists of a series of nine light tables that contain sculptures, material and text relating to obstetrical instruments and processes. Surrounding the light tables are poems printed on sheets of felt.

Much of the work was made in close collaboration with specialists, who became in a sense the 'instrument or tool makers'. The work reflects and reveals some of the processes observed during the extensive period of research, which involved many visits to hospitals, collections and museums.

Nine light tables (each 60 x 80 x 90cm)

Materials: felt, Jesmonite, silver encapsulated Jesmonite, borosilicate glass, foam, porcelain, natural sponge, mother of pearl, silk, cotton wool, video on flat screen monitor, inkjet text on felt.

Supported with funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Board, Edinburgh College of Art and a Scottish Arts Council Creative Scotland Award.

Collection of the Hunterian Art Gallery, University of Glasgow. Purchased with support from the National Collecting Scheme for Scotland, Contemporary Arts Society and the Art Fund.
